Uploading using smartFTP

On the menu bar at the top window beside address,

enter your host name. If your domain has fully propagated enter it

as yoursite.com (obviously using your actual domain name)


If DNS has not yet propagated, enter the ip address of the server.

Uncheck Anonymous which will activate the login and password fields

(unless of course you're setting up anonymous FTP).


Enter your username and password provided in your welcome email.

This is the same as your control panel username and password.

The FTP port is 21 by default.


Now you are ready to connect to the server, either hit enter or simply

click on the connect button in the toolbar or Click FTP -> Connect.


To add this site to your favourites so it can be conveniently located in

future FTP sessions. Click on the "Add to favourites" button on the toolbar.

Or click "Favourites" -> Add to favourites.

This will open a "Add to favourites" dialog box.


To create a new folder here simply click on the "Insert folder" button and

enter a name for the folder. When you are done click ok

When you are done you can close the connection to the server by simply closing

the server window.

Start by opening the local browser to view the files on our computer.

To do this click on FTP from the menu bar and select "Local browser"


To connect to the server, select the site for the drop down menu and click the connect button on the toolbar.


To tile the to windows horizontally click on the horizontal tile button on the menu bar.


Since your control panel is HSphere your root directory is called

after your domain name,


File Display


You can display your files in a couple of different ways.

To get the list of different ways click on the "View" button on the

toolbar and from the drop down menu choose one of the views.

You can view the files in a simple or detailed list or with large or small icons.


Creating directories


To create a new directory (folder) Right-click your mouse, choose New -> Folder

and enter the name of the new folder.


Renaming directories


To rename a folder simply right-click it and choose rename from the menu and enter the new folder.


Deleting directories


To delete a folder / directory simply right click it and select delete from the menu. You will be prompted for confirmation of deletion.


Setting file permissions.


To set file permissions, select your file and right-click it.

Choose "Properties / CHMOD" from the menu. This will open the properties dialog box. You can set the file permissions by entering the actual number (eg, 755, 777) or by checking the boxes individually.

If you need to CHMOD (change file permissions) for several files, you can do them all in one step.

highlight the files then right click and change the permissions as above.

Setting options


If you have more than one domain configured for FTP, select the one you wish to manage from the drop down menu.


To connect to the server click the connect button from the toolbar.


To open the local browser to manage your site files located on your local computer, click FTP -> local browser In order to view both browsers (local and remote), tile them horizontally.


To do this click on the "Horizontal tile button" on the toolbar.

Before you can transfer files you need to ensure that you have the basic Sttings correct.

To check this click on Tools -> Settings. The settings dialog box will then be displayed.

SmartFTP default settings are, for the most part, sufficient for most

users. You may however wish to make changes to suit your taste.


Upload/download files


Locate the files you wish to trasnfer in your local browser.

Once you have located the files on the local browser you wish

to upload, you need to set up the remote browser with the location

of where these files are going to be uploaded to.

So in the remote browser select the directory you wish to upload to.

Since your control panel is HSphere you will be uploding to the directory

called after your domain name. So go to this directory.

Now that we have the source and destination directories open we are

ready to transfer files.

If you wish to transfer multiple files highlight the first file,

then while holding down the shift key click on the last file you

wish to upload. This action will highlight all the files in between.

Now simply drag the files to the remote directory.

To download a file from the server, simply drag and drop it into the

local browser.


Viewing file contents


When transferring files you may want to view the file first. SmartFTP

let's you do that easily.

Select the file you wish to view and right-click it and select view.

This will open the contents of the file in Notepad for you to view.


Setting the transfer mode


As mentioned in setting your Options, you can specify whether you transfer specific file in Binary or ASCII mode. You can leave it in Auto mode, or set it manually.

Any of these three options can be chosen by hitting the appropriate mode button on the toolbar
