When optimising your pages for your key search phrases the most important search engine to work towards is Google as it carries out nearly 40% of searches on the web. A rough approximation of the factors which Google considers important when deciding the ranking of its search results is as follows:

1. Keyword/s in Title Meta tag

2. Keyword/s in Description Meta tag

3. Keyword/s in Body text of the page

4. Keyword density in the above locations - 5-20% of total word count

5. Page Rank/Links - best if are reciprocal links from related sites with higher page rank scores

6. Sufficient Content: Google prefers bigger sites with more content

7. Keyword/s in incoming links from external sites

8. Keyword/s in incoming link text eg if a site was linking to Host.ie the anchor text should read "web hosting company" rather than just Host.ie

9. Keyword/s in text surrounding incoming link text

10. Keyword/s in <H1> tags

11. Keyword/s in outgoing links - best if to related sites with higher PRs

12. Keyword/s in outgoing link text

13. Keyword/s in text surrounding outgoing link text

14. Keyword/s in alt image tags

15. Keyword/s in bold

16. Keyword/s in italics

17. Keyword/s in domain or sub domain name

18. Keyword/s in keywords Meta tag

19. Keyword/s in <h2> tags

20. Regularly changing content
