MTA
From Novara Support Knowledgebase
553 - that domain isn't allowed to be relayed thru this MTA
Background to problem
This problem arises when a Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) or mail server does not allow mail to be routed through its domain, and in return sends out a bounce e-mail to the sender informing them of this. In order to solve this the mail being sent must authenicate itself (prove that it is actually coming from the domain its says it is.). Typically this is achieved in one of three ways.
1. By downloading mail from the MTA and within a certain time period sending an e-mail out through the MTA.
2. By sending the e-mail account's username and password with every e-mail that is sent out. (SMTP AUTH)
3. Changing the outgoing (SMTP server) of your mail client to that of your ISP (the person who provides your internet connection). You will need to get this information from your ISP. Also note here that you only want to change your outgoing mailserver in this instance, your incoming must remain as is.
Typically the most efficient and trouble free method is 2 above. In order to set the mail client (outlook) to use SMTP AUTH you need to follow the instruction below:-
Problem Resolution
1. Open outlook, click on Tools then Accouints and double click on the relevant account.
2. Click on the Servers Tab and check if the incoming and outgoing mail servers are set to mail.domainnamehere.ie
3. In the section below that ensure that the account name is your full email address eg: somemailbox@domainnamehere.ie
4. Below that again ensure that the tick box beside "My mail server requires authentication" is ticked, then click on its settings and ensure this first options is choosen.
5. Apply the changes by clicking ok or apply to close the smaller windows until you are out on the main outlook window.
This should solve your problem now - so try send a mail to see if you receive the bounce message.
- Note: In Outlook 2003 this setting cannot be set using the above. The account needs to be recreated from scratch and the relevant details
entered until the choice of server is encountered (POP3, IMAP etc..) on this screen there is a "Settings" button this must be click and the first option choosen. (Use same settings as incoming mail sever)
